《康熙微服私访记3》沿袭前两部借古讽今、针贬时弊的新派古装轻喜剧作品风格，分为“锦袍记”、“食盒记”和“铃铛记”三个单元故事组成。“锦袍记”中康熙（张国立饰）派大太监三德子（赵亮饰）回故里调查贪官一事，然而当牵扯进亲情之后事情开始变得难以取舍；“食盒记”由宜妃（邓婕饰）的亲戚噶礼送的食盒引发；而在“铃铛记”中，康熙竟然独身离宫，当起了普通老百姓。
经典古装电视连续剧《康熙微服私访记》，自1997年至2007年已有五部作品出品。这五部作品一直延续该剧系列的作品风格，亦庄亦谐中既描摹出康熙在微服私访中的平易近人，又把他严惩贪官的威武一面刻画得入木三分。该剧系列的前四部由张国立自导自演，第五部由孙树培导演执导。
